== Found Child ==
Unlike a LOST child, a FOUND child is not an emergency. However, it is very important to report a found child to Khaki immediately! Try to find out more about the child and their caretakers before bringing the child anywhere. Usually it is best to stay with the child where they are found, talk to other participants, and let Khaki dispatch resources to try to find the caretakers. Rangers should stay together as a team--a Ranger should not be left alone with an unattended child.

== Disoriented Participant ==
It is likely that you will encounter a participant who is “disoriented” in some way during your rangering - drunk, overtired, dehydrated, partying hard, etc.. Very few of these encounters would constitute an “incident”. However, there are a few things to look out for as signals that the situation many need to be FLAMED with your partner and Khaki consulted.

When to FLAME a situation with a participant:
*If other participants express concern about a participant
*If the participant is in a potentially unsafe environment
*If the participant’s actions seem to be potentially dangerous for themselves or others

You will likely still “do nothing” to intervene in many situations, but you can always Find out, Listen, and Analyze!

== Unattended Fire ==

If an unattended fire is found, the finder (Ranger, Fire Core/FAST, participant), should say aloud '''"Is anyone watching this fire pit? It looks unattended."''' If necessary, repeat louder. Attempt to find a camp member.

If someone appears or takes responsibility, please use the opportunity to educate them on the importance of not starting forest fires ("Only you...") and encourage proper attendance of the fire pit.

If there is no response after the second call, put the fire out with whatever means you have available. All fire pits should have a water bucket and shovel.

If you do not feel comfortable putting it out, you can call Fire Core or have Khaki call Fire Core.

Any unattended fire found by either Rangers or Fire Core should be reported to Khaki and recorded in the Ranger Log; include time, date, location, the camp name, and your attempt to locate a responsible party. Make sure to record all details in your notebook so that you can make an accurate report to Khaki via radio or in-person.

Note: this is for ANY unattended fire, not just fire pits.

== Burn Perimeter ==
There are 2 burn perimeters at Firefly: the Bug Burn, and the Temple Burn. Rangers are asked to assist the Fire Core for the Bug Burn. Rangers might be asked by the Temple artist to help independently with the Temple Burn.

To prepare for burn perimeter:
*Wear non-synthetic clothing (cotton or wool)
*Wear your khaki Ranger shirt
*Wear shoes/boots that you can squat in
*Bring a long-sleeved shift/jacket, as it will get dark and colder.
*Bring a headlamp
*Bring a water bottle & snacks
*If you have long hair, be prepared to tie it back or put on a bandana.

You will be asked to be in the field about an hour before the burn is scheduled to begin. There are important instructions and quadrant assignments will be made, so please show up on time.

=== Points to remember ===
We are not authority figures. If you need the crowd to sit, try recruiting someone in the front to help act as an example. Engage with participants and get to know them. We’re all there to have fun!

== Wristbands ==
All Firefly participants should be aware of who is at the event, and if someone seems out of place, they should check wristbands. We have started to have more walk-ons from neighboring land, and as the event gets bigger, this is something we need to be aware of.

Note: Fire spinners wear their bands on their ankles. So a good question to ask if you see someone without a wristband is, “are you a fire spinner”? This is a good opener to start FLAMING: finding out and listening, and then let Khaki know if you think someone might have entered the event without permission.

If you find someone who does not have a wristband, you should report it to Khaki who will report it to the Board to handle. FLAME the situation, but do not be confrontational or attempt to remove anyone from the event.

== Medical Emergency ==

Rangers who encounter participants having medical difficulties should engage the participants and call Khaki to request medical response.

===Calling For First Aid ===

When calling Khaki to request First Aid for medical assistance, the focus of your radio call should be your location and nature and severity of complaint. This allows First Aid to send the right response at the right priority level.

Things you absolutely need to mention:

* Severe bleeding

* Difficult, uneven, or no breathing

* Unconsciousness

If you don’t say any of these things, it will be assumed that the participant is conscious, breathing, and not bleeding heavily.

Use the phrasing “I need X at Y for Z.”

Example: “Khaki, Khaki, this is Ranger Beta. I need First Aid at Diode for participant who is complaining of chest pain. He is semi-conscious and his breathing is labored.”

[To note: this protocol replaces the previous “LOGIC-B” protocol.]

=== Things to Note ===
* Describe, do not diagnose! Describe what is happening in terms of symptoms (dry skin, lowered level of consciousness, burns) rather than making diagnoses (dehydration).
* Don’t use words about “death” or “drugs” over the radio: If you believe someone to be dead, call it is as a medical for an “unconscious and not breathing” person and request an immediate face-to-face with Khaki. This goes along with the “do not diagnose” guideline. You CAN use the word “disoriented” over the radio.
* Be mindful of the environment around you! Make sure that the same thing that injured the participant doesn’t injure you and that well-meaning participants don’t make the situation worse.
* If needed, the Medical Supervisor will call 911. Having a single, informed point of contact will ensure that the right help gets to the injured participant as quickly as possible.

=== If you have medical experience ===
Rangers with medical or first aid certification can operate up to their own scope of practice but must call First Aid or Medical Supervisor to the scene if the injury is any more serious than injuries that might normally be treated at home by Mom (band-aid, etc). In such situations, Rangers cannot terminate care, but they must release the scene to First Aid or Medical Supervisor upon arrival. Rangers should defer to the judgment of the First Aid staff or Medical Supervisor.

Let Khaki know at the beginning of your shift if you have medical/first aid experience. It's always helpful for Khaki to know what resources are available.

===Creating a perimeter===
First Aid personnel may request that Rangers on scene provide a perimeter to keep onlookers at a distance while they work. Stand so that you can easily see the crowd, the medics, the patient, and your partner. Recruit participants to help you with your perimeter: two Rangers is a weak perimeter, but two Rangers plus five participants is a strong one.

===Stay on the scene===
Once you have called for First Aid/Medical Supervisor, you MUST stay with the participant until help arrives and you are cleared from the scene by Khaki. Inform Khaki when First Aid or Medical Supervisor arrives on scene.

=== Staying in contact with Khaki ===

In any situation involving medical response, there are three points at which you should call Khaki:
1. When you arrive and asses that First Aid (or Medical Supervisor) is needed on scene.
2. When First Aid arrives.
3. When First Aid has released you and you are ready to continue your shift.

== Lost Child ==

If someone reports a lost child, call Khaki immediately with the last place seen.

Wait for Khaki to respond! There may be a delay! Khaki has a specific protocol to follow that involves closing the gate and calling the board.

While waiting, make sure you collect the following information to give to Khaki:
* Where/when last seen
* Name, age, height, weight, clothing
* Eye/hair/skin color
* Names of parent(s)
* Home camp
* Reporter’s relationship to child

== Situations that Must Be Reported to Khaki ==
Firefly Rangers are entrusted with considerable flexibility in how they handle the situations they encounter at Firefly. Rangers are trained to rely on their own judgment and abilities and to escalate matters (generally Khaki and then the Officer of the Day) for assistance when appropriate. There are, however, situations which require Rangers report what they observe to Khaki immediately.

In general, Rangers should call in any emergency or incident immediately and should report any event as soon as is reasonably possible.

It is important to note that this policy only requires that a Ranger escalate required information to Khaki. Khaki will then follow up with appropriate actions, which may be as simple as noting the event in the shift log or may include further escalation. It is not the individual Dirt Ranger’s responsibility to contact Law Enforcement or Medical Supervisor.

The requirement to report is in place to ensure that the Firefly Board is aware of events that are critical to maintaining agreements we have in place with other departments and agencies, our internal reporting metrics, or legally required or advisable record keeping and reporting.

Examples of Must-Reports:
* Lost or found child
* Child or elder abuse
* Domestic violence
* Sexual assault
* Non-consensual physical violence
* Death
* Medical emergencies
* Psychiatric emergencies
* Any situation that is likely to put a Ranger in harm’s way
* Any situation that is likely to put a participant in non-consensual grave danger
All reports begin by calling Khaki on the radio. Use plain English to clearly explain what the situation is, and, if you know them, what resources you think you need. Khaki may send other resources as well, and may roll to your location for a face to face.

If you are not sure whether something falls into the above categories, go and and report what you see. Let Khaki figure out whether any follow up action is required.

== Incident Command System (ICS) in brief ==
ICS is a way to manage emergencies and planned events in a swift, efficient, and effective manner.

When ICS is “activated”, a few things will happen:
* There will always be an IC (Incident Commander) “in charge”--the person may change, but someone will be the IC
* There is a “chain of command” of who to report to: everyone should only have to report to ONE person
* Unless/until Khaki or the IC says otherwise, as a Ranger you STILL report to Khaki
If you are the first on-scene at an emergency, call it in to Khaki!
* If Khaki initiates ICS, you may technically be the IC until someone else with more training arrives.
** Use your judgement to keep the scene safe
** Continue to update Khaki!
** You may be asked switch over to the TAC1ICS radio channel
** When the IC arrives (maybe Medical or the OOD), update them on what has happened and let them take command

Rangers always travel and work in pairs - never alone. Your safety and your partner’s safety are always your top priority. Use your time at HQ before shift to meet somebody new and partner with them for your shift; Rangers without partners will be assigned a partner by Khaki.

=== Meet and Greet ===
While on shift, meet and greet your fellow participants. This is important. It will not only melt away the walls of “us and them,” allowing a greater sense of community but will also allow you to get a better sense of city dynamics and potential problem areas. If a problem occurs in your area, you may have already developed a relationship with the citizens involved or their neighbors. Keep in mind that every interaction is a chance to improve our social capital and educate participants about what Rangers do and why we do it.
=== Awareness ===
As you move through the event, trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, pay attention and follow up. If you think that an intervention may be necessary but are not sure, contact Khaki. Remember, always err on the side of safety - yours and the participants’.

In approaching any situation, a Ranger’s initial default action is DO NOTHING (exception: must-report situations like medical emergency, lost child, etc.). If, in the process of doing nothing, you decide that your presence would be helpful, engage by helping participants solve their own problems. If they are unable to do so, try to help them solve the problem. If you are unable to help or need additional resources, call Khaki.

Awareness also applies to your partner and to radio traffic. Do not lose sight of your partner during your shift (with the obvious exception of using the restroom), and always pay attention to radio traffic. Practice listening to the radio while being aware of the city at the same time.

=== Food & Drink Safety ===
Rangers are a respected part of the Firefly and many participants offer to share their food and drink with them. The possible inclusion of psychoactive substances creates a risk that should not be taken lightly. If you do not know the person offering food or drink, the safest thing may be to decline or ask to come back when your shift is done.

To be an effective team, all Rangers must “share the same reality.” Being aware of and in control of what you consume helps ensure this.

All Rangers must be sober while on duty. Rangers should never be in costume off duty. Being intoxicated while in costume may get you kicked out of the Rangers.

It is important to remember that the Ranger costume is a key identifier to participants that you are on duty and there to help; if you are unable to help, then it is time to change your shirt. We trust your judgement. We admire your discretion.

Sometimes there are things that happened on shift that we want to talk to someone about. Sometimes we are excited about what happened, but we need to keep in mind that it is our responsibility to respect participant confidentiality and to maintain our professional integrity. Rangers should not gossip on or off shift. Details of events on shift are not public information.

Sometimes, we want to talk because we need support around what happened on shift. There are many resources available to you to receive appropriate support: Khaki, the OOD, members of the Ranger Council, and other experienced Rangers are available to support you. There is space behind Ranger headquarters available to use to talk privately. Sanctuary is also always available to you.

Preparing for your Shift

== Ranger Costume ==

In the woods, where clothing and costuming explodes with color and variety, the tan-colored Ranger costume/uniform stands out and is easily recognizable. New Rangers will be issued a khaki shirt with Ranger insignia and a Ranger ID laminate (lam) upon successful completion of their Alpha shift. These clothing elements, along with your shift radio, make up the Ranger costume that serves to identify you to the Firefly Community as a Ranger resource. Rangers must be in costume (logoed shirt, ID lam, and radio) while on duty.

Please add ornamentation (patches, pins, cloth, and other objects) to make your Ranger gear unique. Accessories that are utilitarian or display humor and/or art are encouraged.

You are welcome to add your own items of clothing as long as your hat and shirt (and jacket, if you’re wearing one) are khaki-colored and display the Ranger logo. Long-sleeved shirts provide protection from the sun during the day and additional covering for warmth at night. Pockets that have button or zipper closures will carry smaller items safely. Cotton clothing is comfortable and durable. If you are wearing a backpack or hydration pack, you are encouraged to modify it to display a Ranger logo when viewed from behind.

Clothing or accessories that send a message of hostility or aggression are discouraged. Any article of clothing or accessory that might cause participants to confuse us with law enforcement, military, or security personnel (e.g., camouflage) is not appropriate. Rangers on duty should not dress in a sexually provocative manner - it’s not about you.
== Required Equipment / Ranger Checklist ==

A Ranger should carry these personal items at all times while on duty:

*Water (secured bottle or hydration backpack -~Camelbak)
*Notebook and Pencil
*Small flashlight
*Knife or utility tool
*Watch/time-telling device
*Quick-energy snack foods (jerky, trail mix)
*Clothing for changes in temperature
*Whistle (useful for getting the attention of large groups/vehicles)
*A sturdy belt for your radio
*CLOSED-TOED SHOES
**Foot injuries are the #1 First Aid issue at Firefly
**Sticks and rocks are waiting everywhere to ambush you
**Boots or sneakers are ideal; closed-toe tevas are okay; open-toed sandals are not okay for any mobile ranger role.

== Self-Care ==

Your Ranger role requires you to be sober, alert, and ready to respond as needed. Make sure you get enough rest, water, and food during your Firefly.

If you are not going to be in a condition to fulfill your role responsibly, it’s better to let the Rangers know ASAP so they can try to fill your shift. Don’t try to take on too much just to find out that you can’t honor your commitments.

If you need support, ASK! Khaki, the OOD, and members of the ranger council are available to support you however we can. If you need to talk about what happened during a shift, or just want to talk privately, there is space behind Ranger Headquarters.

Upon arrival at Firefly, set up your camp, get acclimated, meet your neighbors, check out the camp next door and relax. Do not sign up for a shift two hours after your expected arrival as this may result in added pressure on the road or upon your arrival.

Once you have signed up for a shift, keep your commitment. You must be sober, well-rested, and have your food, water and clothing needs covered before starting patrol. Including check-in and check-out time, Ranger shifts are generally 4 hours long. Show up at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start of your shift to check in, get a radio, find a partner, and attend the shift briefing. You should also expect to stay in the dirt 15 minutes after the shift is over while the next shift is briefed and sent out.

When on shift, you are not off-duty until released by Khaki. Circumstances may dictate that you remain on shift for a short period beyond a scheduled shift change. At the end of your shift, Khaki will call all Rangers back to HQ to check out. This is a chance to debrief with other shift Rangers, check out of your shift, and maybe get a snack.

Please report to Khaki any notes you’ve made on incidents you dealt with on your shift that you think are important to Khaki. This includes reports of non-urgent situations that might come up again later in the event. Written reports should be legible and should include who/what/where/when -- i.e., your handle, the location of the incident, the time it occurred, and a brief description of what happened.

Occasionally, a Ranger will need to go off duty during a shift due to illness, physical exhaustion, or other causes. If you need to go off duty before your shift time has ended, contact Khaki. If you have completed your shift and still have the Art of Rangering flowing through your heart, you may volunteer to stay on duty. If you do, your extra level of commitment is appreciated. Tell the Khaki your specific time commitment so he or she can plan accordingly. Be sure to let Khaki know when you have gone off shift.

== Authority ==

=== How much authority do Rangers have? ===

Absolutely none—until and unless a participant chooses to give it to us at that particular time.

Or, more accurately, no more than any other participant at Firefly.

One of the inherent contradictions to being a Ranger is that we have no inherent authority. We make an effort not to be authority figures, but people WILL look to us as authority figures, and there are rare times in which we DO need to act as authority figures.

The rare times in which Rangers act as authority figures are:
# Burn perimeter: We help enforce the perimeter that is set by the Fire Safety Team
# In an emergency: We help create a perimeter to ensure that First Aid staff can do their job sufficiently.
# The OOD is authorized to act on behalf of the Firefly Board in certain limited conditions having to do with participant and event safety.

That is it.

In those cases, Rangers are just acting as sober, identifiable assistance to other teams: to Fire Safety and First Aid, or on behalf of the Firefly Board. Often, we end up being the communicators of rules that have been determined by the community and the Board, but even then we rarely dictating or enforce. We strive to help hold the Community and its values together.

Any situation where someone is asking you to make a judgment call or enforce a rule, you can kick it sideways. You can pass it to Khaki, who will pass it to whoever needs to be involved.

== Non-confrontational, Non-authoritarian Methods ==

So what do we do if we DON’T have authority?

* Focus is on participants: It’s not about us
* We use non-confrontational methods
* We mediate, influence, and persuade rather than dictate, enforce or dominate
* Help participants help themselves
* We provide good information
* Walk away when needed

== Social capital ==

We use the term “social capital” to describe the trust and confidence that participants, staff, law enforcement, and medical personnel have in the Rangers: our “street cred.”

Social capital is our sole source of authority; it is what we run on. Without the confidence of participants and staff, we would be unable to function effectively.

Rangering involves building and using social capital appropriately.

=== Reputation, Credibility and Effectiveness ===
By helping participants in trouble, by treating everyone with respect, and by acting professionally and with integrity, we have, over time, built up a lot of social capital with participants and staff.

Because of the Rangers’ social capital:
* People will listen to you in way that they would not listen to a random participant offering advice or asking them to change their behavior.
* Law enforcement, medical, and other departments will often seek your assistance and pay attention to your input.
* When Rangers are perceived as helpful, effective, collaborative, professional, and impartial (i.e., high social capital), we will be listened to, taken seriously, and trusted.
* When Rangers are perceived as authoritarian, uptight, entitled, unprofessional, or incompetent (i.e., low social capital), we will be ignored or resisted.

=== Adding & subtracting Social capital ===
Social capital is like a bank account: every good interaction you have with a participant or staff member makes a deposit into our social capital account, and every bad interaction withdraws from it.

Unfortunately, bad interactions with Rangers often make good stories, so participants will tend to tell all their friends when they’ve seen a Ranger acting unprofessional or authoritarian.

When you do good, you make a small deposit in our account; when you do bad, you make a huge withdrawal.

We expect every Ranger to act as an ambassador and an educator, both to participants and to other volunteers. When out in the city or on a call, talk to participants and staff about what we do and why we do it. Let them know that we’re here for them, and show them by your actions that we are a resource they can trust.

== Un-Rangerly Behavior ==

Both members of the community and fellow Rangers can report incidents of un-Rangerly behavior to any member of the Ranger Council, the Firefly Conduct Committee, or a similar community organization dedicated to the oversight of Ranger behavior.

Un-Rangerly behavior shall include, but is not limited to:
* Harassment
* Violence
* Sexual misconduct
* Misusing community trust
* Failing to report an emergency
* Knowingly neglecting ranger responsibilities
* Being intoxicated on-duty
* Failing to keep the privacy of confidential information

=== Ranger Responses to Un-Rangerly Behavior ===
The Firefly Ranger Organization takes incidents of un-Rangerly behavior while identifiable as a Ranger (coming on or off shift, while at HQ, anytime you are in costume or wearing a Ranger laminate) very seriously. == Shift Tasks ==

While on shift, Rangers may need to do a variety of tasks. These could include but are not limited to:
* Walk around the event: We try to have rangers check on all areas of the event periodically.
* Stay in one place for a while: it’s recommended to hang out and chill with other participants, especially if it’s a quiet day and there are a couple teams of rangers on.
* Assist participants in acclimating to the woods and the community.
* Answer questions like:
** Where are the porta potties?
** Where can I camp?
** Can I light my art on fire?
** Have you seen my pants?
* Help out agitated and disoriented participants.
** They may need to go to Sanctuary
** They may need medical attention
* Mediate situations and disputes between participants.
* Address and report any instances of non-consensual physical or sexual assault.
* Inform participants of potentially hazardous weather situations.
* Maintain safety perimeters and scene control as needed.
* Provide other non-confrontational mediation and safety activities as needed.
* Mobilize medical, law enforcement, fire response, or other life-safety services.

They rise from the <s>dirt</s> mud when needed and fade back into the <s>dirt</s> mud when they are not. First, and most importantly, they do nothing. Only after doing nothing will they follow (as necessary) the basic guidelines of FLAME: Find Out, Listen, Analyze, Mediate, Explain. They have radios to assist in calling for help when requested and are supported at the event by Echelon at Ranger HQ, Khaki in charge of the shift, and the rest of Ranger leadership. Dirt Rangers ranger in pairs (or sometimes threes.)

(Really, as this is Firefly, we should be calling them “Mud” rangers, but the name comes from That Thing In the Desert and we haven’t had enough motivation to change it. Yet.)

Dirt Rangers are the heart and soul of the Ranger Organization. Dirt Rangers are our trained volunteers wandering the event and interacting with participants - all other Ranger roles support them. As a new ranger, you are considered an “alpha” until the end of your first (“alpha”) shift. Below are the steps from Firefly participant to alpha to Firefly Ranger.

It's so that as a group, we can draw from a common set of values and expectations on how we do what we do and then do it well. Khaki serves all on shifts as the Ranger dispatch. Khaki is always available as a resource to all Rangers on duty and acts as a liaison to other cores and the Firefly Board during that shift.

* Arrive 15-30 minutes before the end of the previous shift.
* Meet with previous Khaki and debrief- look through the Ranger Log and get caught up.
* Update the Ranger Log and white board if needed:
* OnComm info: Board, First Aid, Medical Supervisor, Sanctuary, Sanctuary Supervisor, DPW, OOD
* Weather: Forecast for day/shift

* Announce change in Khaki over the radio--especially since change is now mid-shift
* Meet and greet your Rangers 15 minutes before their shift starts
* Note any special skills or assets (e.g. Sanctuary, First Aid, Fire)
* Note any preferences or needs
* Make sure your Rangers are prepared for shift dressed appropriately and hydrated
* Pair up Rangers
* Assign Dirt Rangers to specific locations and cover all parts of the event (e.g. gate/greeters, lower parking, upper parking, forest)
* Write down all notes, Ranger names, skills, assets, and Ranger location assignments
* Give a quick shift briefing and pep talk before sending Rangers on their way
* Dispatch your Rangers to their assigned zones

If left with an odd number send 3 out together or keep one to assist Khaki.

* You can roam if you have a partner and Echelon is at HQ. Bring the Khaki phone with you.

During Shift Tips

Support your Rangers by guiding them and keeping them engaged while allowing them to practice their art. You are not the "boss", you are the guide. You encourage, care for, and watch over. You let them handle as much as they can. They are not working for YOU, you are there for them.

A great way to check in with your Rangers is to change up their zone, request a specific task or ask them to check out a location. This allows you to discover what they are up to while not dictating their every move.

== Khaki in ICS Briefly ==
When ICS is enacted and Khaki is not usually IC, Khaki can be appointed by the IC as part of the General Staff, Operations Lead or Ranger Operations Lead. Khaki’s default roles will be Planning and Logistics on the General Staff.

Planning supports the incident action planning process by tracking resources, collecting/analyzing information, and maintaining documentation.

Logistics arranges for resources and needed services to support achievement of the incident objectives.

Operations Lead manages operations execution to meet incident objectives.

Ranger Operations Lead works with the OL to execute operations execution to meet incident objectives.

Enacting ICS happens on the radio. An incident is reported or escalates to where you believe help is needed from many cores. It is important to let everyone On Comm know that ICS is in effect and to be alert for updates. The ICS structure assumes roles and allows for expansion with the needs of the incident. Anyone On Comm could be called to the incident for support.

* To enact ICS make an All Com broadcast
** “Break, Break, Break- All Com- All Com- We have a Lost child- Repeat Lost Child. ICS is enacted. Khaki Clear.”

* If Khaki is on scene, they would be the IC until someone more experienced arrives at the Incident site and assumes the IC role. If Khaki is not on scene, the person with the most experience and comfort level will assume IC.

== Other Safety Cores ==

The other Safety Cores are in our Safety Cluster: First Aid, Sanctuary, Fire, and Radios.

=== First Aid Core ===
The First Aid Core is available for help with both serious and minor injuries. There are always First Aid Volunteers and a Medical Supervisor on-call (on the same radio channel with us, SAFETY1), but it's best to make the call to Khaki to coordinate with them.

For participants who are looking for very basic first aid items to self-treat injuries (band-aid, tylenol, etc), Rangers have access to basic supplies at HQ (look for "Self-Service First Aid Kit.") If that kit does not have what they need, then Khaki can call for a First Aid Volunteer.

See the section on [[Emergencies|Medical Emergencies]] for calling First Aid. When calling, include your location and information about the nature & severity of the injury.

=== Sanctuary===
Sanctuary is a safe space where the citizens of Firefly can seek an outlet or assistance with any emotional trauma. Sanctuary is located at the top of the field by the entrance to the woods towards Steam Bath. Sanctuary volunteers will always be available there, and there is a Sanctuary supervisor on-call.If appropriate, Rangers can offer to escort or direct participants to Sanctuary if they’d like a quiet, safe place to talk with someone confidentially. If you think a participant could benefit from some time in Sanctuary, contact Khaki. There may be a ranger available that could help - Khaki will know. Remember that Sanctuary is a limited resource and, in most cases involving participants in some degree of distress, not a necessity. Use your discretion when suggesting or accessing Sanctuary as a resource. Sanctuary should not be used as a “drunk tank.” If you do end up escorting someone to Sanctuary, let Khaki know.

===Fire Core and Fire Arts Safety Team (FAST)===

Fire Core includes several teams: FAST (Fire Art Safety Team), Fire Enclave, and Fire Marshal.

Fire Core/FAST may be called to handle unattended fires and should be called to handle potentially unsafe flame effects. Fire Core will be on the same radio channel as Rangers, but call any situation in to Khaki.

Fire Core also provides fire safety training during Firefly that is open to anyone who is interested. This training occurs early in the event and for the Bug Burn Perimeter.
