Ranger Jargon

Communications Team | Team responsible for internal and external communications, internal documentation, and acting as a liaison to affiliated Ranger groups. | |

Council | Ranger Council is the year-round group responsible for setting policies & fulfilling all tasks. Made up of Ranger Lead, XO, and 6 team leads (Training, Personnel, Emergency Response, Logistics, Communications, Social) | |
Dirt Ranger | Ranger on duty that is walking the woods with a partner. | |
Do nothing | The first thing a ranger does. Find out and observe before jumping into any situation. Rangers should try to intervene as little as possible, with the goal of getting participants to solve their own problems. | |
Echelon | Ranger shift role responsible for giving out radios, t-shirts & Lams, and tracking the schedule. Assists Khaki by keeping information & resources organized & available. Has no more authority than any dirt Ranger. Can help with Radio issues. | |
Emergency Response Team | Team responsible for pre-event coordination planning, post-event follow-up, and acts as a liaison to the other Firefly safety cores. | |

FAST | Fire Arts Safety Team | |
First Aid | Firefly safety core that responds to serious and sometimes minor injuries. Formerly called "Medical". | |

ICS | Incident Command System. Procedure used to organize the safety department of Firefly to provide a coordinate response to emergencies. | |
Khaki | Title for current Ranger shift lead. May change during the shift to a different individual. | |
Khaki | 1) Ranger in charge of the shift & all event radio traffic.Monitors communications and coordinates ranger activities throughout Firefly. 2) The tan-colored clothing rangers wear when on duty. | |
KIT | Khaki in Training. 2+ year Rangers learning the ropes of being Khaki. | |
Lam | Laminate; Ranger ID badge during the event. Helps identify you as a Ranger while on duty to other participants. | |
LNT | Leave no trace, one of the 10 Principles of Burning Man. | |

Logistics & Infrastructure Team | Team that coordinates with DPW and is responsible for radios and other HQ items. Ranger team responsible for Ranger HQ set-up, infrastructure, and tear-down. | |
Mentor | Ranger that coaches and evaluates Alpha Rangers during their Alpha shift. | |
Moop | "Matter out of Place", which is a problem when we are trying for LNT (Leave no trace.) | |
OOD | The Officer of the Day serves the Ranger Lead, the Ranger XO, Khaki, and all the Dirt Rangers on duty by coordinating the major issues of the day across shifts. | |
Perimeter | A physical boundary created (often just using our bodies/presence) to limit access to a dangerous scene (eg, Bug burn) or where a team needs space to work (eg, medical.) | |
Personnel Team | Team in charge of personnel database management, ranger retention, and shift scheduling. | |
Policy | a course or principle of action adopted or proposed by a government, party, business, or individual. | |
Procedure | 1-an established or official way of doing something.

Radio Handle | A nickname used by a Ranger for radio communications & scheduling. | |
Ranger Council | Coordination body that runs the ranger organization. The Ranger Lead, Ranger XO, and Team leads make up the Ranger council. | |
Ranger Lead | Face and visionary of the Ranger organization. Accountable to the Firefly Board and keeps the Board updated. Liasion to the Firefly community and other Firefly cores. | |
Ranger XO | Executive Officer; Operations manager for the teams. Works with team leads to ensure each teams is working effectively. Participates as a member of Ranger Council and works closely with the Ranger Lead. | |
Sanctuary | A safe space where the citizens of Firefly can seek an outlet or assistance with any emotional trauma. | |
Shiny Penny | 1st year rangers after they've completed their Alpha shift | |
Social Capital | The trust & confidence that participants, etc. have in the Firefly Rangers as a whole, built by treating everyone with respect & acting with integrity & professionalism. | |
Social Team | Team that coordinates year round social events for rangers and helps with recruitment and public relations. | |
Team Lead | Ensures the team is fulfilling its duties and serves as a member of the Ranger council | |
Ten Principles | Principles that reflect the burner community ethos & culture: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leave no Trace, Participation, and Immediacy.
