Revision as of 23:37, 14 April 2017

In some situations, you or Khaki might need to interact with these other cores or individuals. These are good groups to know about: First Aid, Sanctuary, Fire, Radio, DPW, Gate, Security, Firefly Event Leads, Board

Other Safety Cores

The other Safety Cores are in our Safety Cluster: First Aid, Sanctuary, Fire, and Radios.

First Aid Core

The First Aid Core (Formerly “Medical” is available for help with both serious and minor injuries. This core is changing its name for 2016 to better reflect the level of expertise of most of its volunteers. In a medical emergency, you can still call for a Medical Supervisor, but for non-emergency matters please call for “First Aid.” There will always be a Medical Supervisor and First l Volunteers on call during the event.

If there is a call for a “blue dot”, Khaki will get clarification for whether First Aidl is needed or if it is a situation requiring minor first aid that a Ranger with first aid experience (“blue dot”) could respond to. Rangers, including blue dot Rangers, should defer to the judgement of First Aid staff.

If it is a medical emergency, please still call for “MEDICAL” - not “blue dot” - to avoid confusion!

If needed, the Medical Supervisor will call 911. No other Rangers should call 911. Having a single, informed point of contact will ensure that the right help gets to the injured participant as quickly as possible.

If you would like to volunteer for First Aid, email medical@fireflyartscollective.org.

If you would like to be a Ranger who can help out with minor first aid, tell Khaki (see section 3.3 on Ranger “blue dots”).

Sanctuary

Sanctuary is a safe space where the citizens of Firefly can seek an outlet or assistance with any emotional trauma. Sanctuary is located at the top of the field by the entrance to the woods towards Steam Bath. Sanctuary volunteers will always be available there, and there is a Sanctuary supervisor on-call.

If appropriate, Rangers can offer to escort or direct participants to Sanctuary if they’d like a quiet, safe place to talk with someone confidentially. If you think a participant could benefit from some time in Sanctuary, call Khaki and explain the situation. There may be a green dot available that could help - Khaki will know. Remember that Sanctuary is a limited resource and, in most cases involving participants in some degree of distress, not a necessity. Use your discretion when suggesting or accessing Sanctuary as a resource. Sanctuary should not be used as a “drunk tank.” If you do end up escorting someone to Sanctuary, let Khaki know.

While Sanctuary and Rangers are separate, they share skills in common.

Skills: Both green dot Rangers and Sanctuary volunteers are trained to help participants who are in emotional distress. However, “green dot” Rangers are Rangers, not Sanctuary volunteers, and Sanctuary volunteers are not “green dots”. See Section about “green dots”. There are separate Sanctuary and green dot trainings. Volunteers for either group are welcome to cross-train in addition to their primary training - Sanctuary volunteers must attend Sanctuary training but are welcome to attend a green dot training when it is offered, and Rangers can attend Sanctuary training.

In 2013 and 2014, Rangers were present at Sanctuary as a “Ranger Outpost”, but that as of 2015 there will no longer be a Ranger Outpost and there will no longer be Rangers positioned at Sanctuary.

If you are interested in volunteering for Sanctuary or receiving Sanctuary training, please email sanctuary@fireflyartscollective.org.

Fire Core and Fire Arts Safety Team (FAST)

Fire Core includes several teams: FAST (Fire Art Safety Team), Fire Enclave, and Fire Marshall.

The mission of the Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) is to provide experienced support for artists both pre-event and on-site and to ensure the safe use of fire and flame effects at Firefly.

Fire Core/FAST may be called to handle unattended fires and should be called to handle potentially unsafe flame effects. Fire Core will be on the same radio channel as Rangers, but always call any situation into Khaki.

See section on Unattended Fires in 10.6.

Fire Core also provides fire safety training during Firefly that open to anyone who is interested. This training occurs early in the event and for the Bug Burn Perimeter.

If you are interested in Fire Core, email fire@fireflyartscollective.org.

If you are interested in volunteering for FAST or receiving training, email fast@fireflyartscollective.org.

Radio Core

The Radio Core (now separate from Rangers, but we work with them) maintains especially with testing radios and equipment. If you are interested, email radios@fireflyartscollective.org.
